The easiest way to use access rights on Webgarden is to grant access to your users according to their default user type - registered or anonymous. You can have categories (or documents, panels, etc.) which can only be seen by registered users, as well as categories which can only be seen by anonymous users.

There are 7 categories on the website below, all of which are now visible to both registered and anonymous users.

It’s easy to hide a category from anonymous users. In administration, go to the category you would like to hide. Then hover over the yellow edit icon in the upper right-hand corner and select Access Rights.

In the Anonymous Users dropdown menu select Deny All Access and save.

Go back to your website and refresh to see the changes.

You can hide content from registered users in the same way. The only difference is that when you go back to your website you won’t see the changes right away because they only apply to registered users. You will have to log in as a registered user to review the changes.

Once you’ve logged in you’ll be able to see the categories you’ve hidden from your anonymous users, but not the categories you’ve hidden from your registered users.

Dividing users into just two types (anonymous and registered) isn’t always enough. Absolutely anyone can register on your website. That’s why Webgarden lets you add your own user types. You can have as many user types as you want, add users to them however you’d like, and set rules for them as you see fit.

Consider this example: What if you have some photos on your website that you don’t want to show to your anonymous or registered users, only to the people pictured? How can you do that?

You can hide content from both anonymous and registered users in exactly the same way as you did in the previous example, or you can do it via general settings. It doesn’t matter which way you choose. The end result is the same.

In administration go to the Settings tab, and click on Access Rights in the left column. You will see a list of all user types. If you haven’t created any new user types yet, you will only see those there by default - anonymous users, registered users, and administrators.

Click on the yellow edit icon next to Anonymous Users to see options similar to those you had before.

Where it says Add a Rule For, use the dropdown menu to select the page with the photos you’d like to hide. Then use the Rule dropdown menu to select Deny All Access. Finally, be sure to click on Add New Rule.

The new rule will appear in the list of rules.

Likewise, add the same rule for registered users.

Then neither anonymous nor registered users will be able to see the photos.

Now create a new user type for the people you want to share your photos with. Under the Settings tab in Access Rights hover over the green + icon in the upper right-hand corner and select Add New User Type.

Edit the name of the user type (it could be called Week 1 Campers, for example), and save.

Now if you return to Access Rights, you can see your new user type Week 1 Campers.

In order for users to be added to your new user type, they have to be registered with a website powered by Webgarden. If they haven’t registered with any Webgarden websites you can register them yourself under the Settings tab in Registration.

Once your users have been registered, go to Settings, select Access Rights, and click on the yellow edit icon next to the user type Week 1 Campers.

In the field called User Email, enter the email address of a user you would like to add to the group, and click on Add.

Now you will see the user listed in Week 1 Campers.

When you create a new user type, the default rule is Allow Reading of Public Content Only. So if you don’t make any changes to the rules, Week 1 Campers will be able to see all of the public content on your website.

You can of course change the rules for this user type at any time, just like you did with the other user types.
